Courage the Cowardly Dog always stuck with me—not so much because of the fear itself, but because of how weird it is. The loneliness of the landscape, that house stranded in the middle of nowhere, and the constant feeling that something is off… even when nothing is happening.
This piece started with Justo Bagge’s mask. It doesn’t really have a purpose beyond unsettling you. It’s hostile by design—an almost absurd, simple act of aggression aimed at a little dog who already lives on high alert. Here, I wanted to stay faithful to the flat, near-2D look, and use oil pastels to give the mask texture and visual weight—testing how that feeling of discomfort can be represented.
Gouache, oil pastels, and colored pencils on toned mixed-media paper.
30 × 23 cm (11.8 × 9.1 in)
Unframed. Ships worldwide.
